How to use clipboard history in Windows 11: the complete guide
Updated on
Short answer: press Windows + V. The first time, select Turn on. From then on, everything you copy (text, HTML, and images up to 4 MB) is saved in a list of your last 25 items. Click an item to paste it, pin the ones you want to keep, and clear the rest whenever you like.
Turn clipboard history on
Either:
- press Windows + V and select Turn on, or
- open Start > Settings > System > Clipboard and set Clipboard history to On.
Only items you copy after turning it on are saved.
Open it and paste an item
- Click where you want to paste.
- Press Windows + V.
- Click an item, or move with the arrow keys and press Enter.
The panel opens near your cursor. It closes after you paste, or when you press Esc.
Pin items you use often
Pinned items survive restarts and Clear all, and are never pushed out to make room for new ones.
- Press Windows + V.
- On an item, select … (See more), then Pin. On some versions, a pin icon appears directly on the item.
- Unpin it the same way.
Good candidates: your address, your email signature, a meeting link, a standard reply.
Delete one item or clear everything
- One item: Windows + V, then … on the item, then Delete.
- Everything except pinned items: Windows + V, then Clear all (on some versions under the … menu at the top).
- From Settings: System > Clipboard > Clear clipboard data > Clear. This clears your device and synced cloud data, except pinned items (Microsoft Support).
Sync clipboard history between Windows PCs
- Settings > System > Clipboard.
- Turn on Clipboard history across your devices.
- Choose Automatically sync text that I copy or Manually sync. With manual sync, you select the sync button on an item in Windows + V.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account or work account on every PC.
Sync is for text, and only between Windows devices. It doesn't reach a Mac or an iPhone. (For those, see copy and paste between Windows and Mac and between iPhone and Windows PC.)
The other tabs: emoji, GIFs, symbols, kaomoji
The Windows + V panel shares its window with the emoji panel. Tabs at the top give you emoji, GIFs, kaomoji and symbols. You can also open the emoji tab directly with Windows + . (period).
The limits you should know
According to Microsoft:
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Number of items | 25 (older unpinned items are removed) |
| Size per item | 4 MB |
| Supported formats | Text, HTML, bitmap images |
| After a restart | Cleared, except pinned items |
| Sync | Text, between Windows devices with the same account |
Practical consequences:
- Files copied in File Explorer don't appear (only the file reference was copied).
- Large screenshots may be skipped. See screenshots not showing in Win+V.
- History doesn't survive a reboot, so pin anything you need tomorrow.

Privacy and work PCs
- Clipboard history can hold passwords and personal data. Clear it after sensitive work, or turn it off.
- On managed PCs, your organization can disable clipboard history or cross-device sync by policy. The settings then appear grayed out.
- Prefer your password manager's autofill to copying passwords.
If it isn't working
Toggle the setting off and on, restart Windows Explorer or the Clipboard User Service, and install updates. Step-by-step: Win+V not working: fixes.
When you might want more
Windows + V is excellent for "what did I copy ten minutes ago?" People who copy a lot often add a clipboard manager for history that survives restarts, search, folders, or the same history on a Mac and iPhone: Ditto and CopyQ (open source), ClipClip, or Clipster (history with search, Pins and previews on Windows, Mac and iPhone, with end-to-end encrypted sync). Compare them in the best clipboard managers for Windows and Clipster vs the Windows clipboard. Clipster is on the download page.
