How to copy and paste between a Windows PC and a Mac

Updated on

Short answer: Windows and macOS don't share a clipboard. Apple's Universal Clipboard only works between Apple devices, and Windows clipboard sync only works between Windows devices. To move text between a PC and a Mac, use a free workaround (a notes app, email, chat, cloud document), a keyboard-and-mouse sharing tool that also shares the clipboard, or a cross-platform clipboard app.

Why it doesn't work out of the box

  • Apple Universal Clipboard works between Apple devices (such as a Mac and an iPhone) that are near each other, signed in to the same Apple Account, with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Handoff on (Apple Support). Windows isn't part of it.
  • Windows "Clipboard history across your devices" syncs text between Windows devices signed in with the same Microsoft or work account (Settings > System > Clipboard; Microsoft Support). macOS isn't part of it.

Each ecosystem stops at its own border, so you need something that runs on both.

Free methods (no extra app)

1. A notes app or document you already use

Paste into a note on one computer, then open it on the other: OneNote, Google Docs or Keep, Notion, Obsidian with sync, or Apple Notes through iCloud.com in a browser on the PC.

  • Best for: longer text, and things you want to keep.
  • Downside: several steps each time.

2. Send it to yourself

Email it to yourself, or use the "notes to self" or saved-messages chat in a messaging app installed on both computers.

  • Best for: one-off links.
  • Downside: clutters your inbox or chats, and isn't ideal for sensitive data.

3. Shared folder or cloud drive (for files)

For files, rather than text, use a cloud drive installed on both computers (OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud for Windows) or a shared network folder. The clipboard isn't the right tool for large files.

4. Remote desktop

If you control one computer from the other through remote desktop software (for example Microsoft's Windows App on a Mac connecting to a Windows PC), you can turn on clipboard redirection in the saved PC's settings, and it handles text, images and files. Your organization's policy can restrict it (Microsoft Learn).

Keyboard-and-mouse sharing tools

If your PC and Mac sit side by side on the same desk, a tool that lets you control both with one keyboard and mouse often shares the clipboard too:

  • Input Leap (free, open source; a successor to Barrier) and Deskflow (open source). Both can share the clipboard once it's enabled in their settings.
  • Synergy (commercial): shares text and images, not files (Synergy Help Center).
  • Logitech Flow, with a compatible Logitech mouse: copy text, images and files on one computer and paste on the other (Logitech Support).

Best for: two computers on the same desk and network. Limits: both computers must be turned on and connected to the same network. Features (text only, or also images and files) vary by tool, and setup can take some tinkering with firewalls and permissions.

Cross-platform clipboard apps

If you switch between a PC and a Mac regularly, possibly in different places (an office PC and a home Mac), a clipboard app that runs on both removes the friction. Check these points:

  • How it syncs: over your local network only, or over the internet from anywhere.
  • Encryption: ideally end-to-end, so the sync server can't read your data.
  • What syncs: plain text only, or also images, links and files.
  • History: just the latest item, or a searchable history.

Options include:

  • CrossPaste: open source, syncs over the local network.
  • ClipboardFusion: Windows-first, with macros and text cleanup, plus Mac and mobile companion apps.
  • Clipster: clipboard history with search, Pins and previews on Windows, Mac and iPhone, synced with end-to-end encryption, so what you copy on the PC appears in Clipster on the Mac and vice versa.

Which method should you use?

Situation Best fit
Occasionally, a link or a paragraph Notes app, email or chat
Files and folders Cloud drive or shared folder
You remote into the other computer Remote desktop with clipboard redirection
Both computers on the same desk, all day Keyboard-and-mouse sharing tool
Computers in different places, frequent copying Cross-platform clipboard app with encrypted sync

Privacy tips

  • The clipboard often holds passwords, codes and personal data. Prefer tools that encrypt end to end, or that stay on your local network.
  • Use your password manager's own apps on both computers instead of copying passwords between them.
  • Don't use public chats or shared documents to move sensitive text.

FAQ

Does Universal Clipboard work with Windows?

No. It only works between Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account.

Can Windows clipboard sync send to a Mac?

No. It syncs between Windows devices signed in with the same Microsoft or work account.

What's the fastest free way to copy text from PC to Mac?

For occasional use, a notes app on both computers. If they're side by side, a free keyboard-and-mouse sharing tool like Input Leap can share the clipboard directly.

Can I copy images or files between Windows and Mac?

Use a cloud drive or shared folder for files. Some clipboard and keyboard-sharing tools also handle images and files; check each tool.

Is syncing my clipboard through the cloud safe?

It's safest when the data is end-to-end encrypted, so the server can't read it. Otherwise, prefer local-network tools for sensitive data.
