Windows clipboard history (Win+V) not working? Fixes that actually work

Updated on

Short answer: first, make sure clipboard history is turned on: press Windows + V and select Turn on, or go to Settings > System > Clipboard. If it's on but empty, toggle it off and on, restart the Clipboard User Service (cbdhsvc) or Windows Explorer, and install pending updates. On a work PC, your organization may have disabled it by policy.

Start with "Is it really broken?" below: several "bugs" are actually normal Windows behavior.

Is it really broken? Four behaviors that are by design

According to Microsoft Support:

  1. History is cleared when you restart, except pinned items. An empty Win+V after a reboot is normal.
  2. It keeps 25 entries. Older items are removed automatically unless pinned.
  3. Each item can be up to 4 MB. Larger items, such as some full-screen screenshots, won't appear.
  4. Only text, HTML and bitmap images are supported. Copying a file in File Explorer doesn't add it to the history.

If your problem matches one of these, nothing is broken. We explain the limits in detail in Windows clipboard history limit.

Fix 1: turn clipboard history on (or back on)

  1. Press Windows + V. If you see a Turn on button, select it.
  2. Or open Start > Settings > System > Clipboard and set Clipboard history to On.
  3. Copy a short piece of text, then press Windows + V again.

Fix 2: toggle it off and on

This resets the feature without a reboot, and it fixed the issue for many users after a 2024 Windows 11 update (reported on Microsoft Q&A).

  1. Settings > System > Clipboard.
  2. If you see Suggested actions, turn it off. This option isn't available in every region.
  3. Turn Clipboard history off, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on.
  4. Test with a fresh copy.

Fix 3: restart Windows Explorer

The clipboard panel is tied to the Windows shell.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. In Processes, find Windows Explorer, right-click it and choose Restart.
  3. Try Windows + V again.

Fix 4: restart the Clipboard User Service

Windows runs clipboard history through a per-user service whose name starts with cbdhsvc_.

  1. Right-click Start and open Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
  2. Run:
    Get-Service -Name 'cbdhsvc_*' | Restart-Service

  3. Copy something and test.

You can also do it from services.msc: find Clipboard User Service_xxxxx, right-click it and choose Restart.

Fix 5: install updates and restart

Clipboard bugs have come and gone with cumulative updates: users reported Win+V stopped showing items after a 2024 preview update, and a later update fixed it. Go to Settings > Windows Update, install everything, and restart.

Fix 6: check whether your organization disabled it

On work or school PCs, IT can block clipboard history with the Allow Clipboard History policy (Group Policy: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > OS Policies). Microsoft documents it in the Experience Policy CSP. When it's blocked, the setting in Settings > System > Clipboard is grayed out with a message that it's managed by your organization.

In that case, don't try to work around it: ask your IT team. There may be a security reason, and installing another clipboard tool may also be against policy.

Advanced (personal PCs only): the same policy is stored in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System, value AllowClipboardHistory (0 = blocked). If you set it to 0 yourself in the past, delete it or set it to 1. Back up the registry first.

Fix 7: images or screenshots don't appear

  • The image may be over 4 MB. Try a smaller capture.
  • You may have copied the file rather than the picture. Open it in Photos or Paint and copy from there.
  • Some apps put images on the clipboard in their own format. Paste into Paint first, then copy again.

Snipping Tool also saves captures automatically to your Screenshots folder, so you don't depend on the clipboard. Full explanation: screenshots not showing in Win+V. For everything Win+V can do, see the complete Windows 11 clipboard history guide.

Fix 8: sync across devices doesn't work

Settings > System > Clipboard > Clipboard history across your devices must be on, and you must be signed in with the same Microsoft or work account on each PC. This only syncs between Windows devices, not with a Mac or iPhone.

If it works but isn't enough

Once Win+V works, you may find you want more than it offers: history that survives a restart, more than 25 items, folders, or the same history on a Mac or iPhone. That's what third-party clipboard managers are for:

  • Ditto: free, open source and long-established on Windows.
  • CopyQ: open source, with advanced features and scripting.
  • ClipClip: clipboard history with folders.
  • Clipster: history with full-text search, Pins (named boards for the copies you reuse), previews, and end-to-end encrypted sync with Clipster on Mac and iPhone.

FAQ

Why does Win+V say "Nothing here"?

Clipboard history was either just turned on, cleared by a restart, or isn't recording. Copy some text and check again. If it's still empty, toggle the setting and restart the Clipboard User Service.

Why does my clipboard history disappear after a restart?

That's by design: Windows clears clipboard history at each restart, except pinned items. Pin what you want to keep.

How many items does Windows clipboard history keep?

25 entries. Older unpinned items are removed automatically.

Why is clipboard history grayed out in Settings?

It's disabled by a policy, usually set by your organization's IT team. Ask them.

Does Win+V work on Windows 10?

Yes. Clipboard history arrived with the October 2018 Update (version 1809). Note that Windows 10 stopped receiving free security updates in October 2025.

Disclosure: We make Clipster, a clipboard manager mentioned at the end of this guide. The fixes below don't require any app.

Try it on your own devices

Available on Mac, Windows and iPhone.
