Honest comparison

Clipster vs Maccy

Maccy is one of the best free apps you can put on a Mac: tiny, fast, open source. If one Mac is all you use, it's hard to beat. Clipster is for when your clipboard needs to follow you to Windows and iPhone, encrypted end to end.

Platforms and sync: where the paths split

Maccy runs on macOS only, and it doesn't sync: everything stays on that one Mac. That's deliberate; Maccy does one job and keeps it simple.

Clipster runs on Mac, Windows and iPhone. With Pro, what you copy on one device is waiting on the others: copy an address on your Mac, paste it on your iPhone; grab a snippet on your work PC, find it at home.

Privacy: local vs. zero-knowledge

Maccy's privacy story is the simplest there is: everything is stored on your Mac and never leaves it. Nothing to trust, because nothing is sent.

Clipster keeps that spirit when your Clips do travel: each one is encrypted on your device (AES-256-GCM) before it syncs, and the server only stores ciphertext it can't read. Zero-knowledge: not even we can see your clipboard. And if you don't need sync, your Clips never leave your device on the free tier, just like with Maccy.

Everyday use: minimal vs. organized

Maccy is built for speed: open it with a shortcut, type to search, press Enter. You can pin a few items to keep them at the top.

Clipster goes further on organization: Pins are named boards that group the Clips you reuse (code, prompts, addresses, canned replies), with previews for text, links, images and files. On iPhone, the Clipster keyboard pastes any Clip inside any app.

And let's not pretend otherwise: on the interface, the two aren't in the same league. Maccy is a list in your menu bar, and that's exactly what it sets out to be. Clipster is a real app: cards with previews, code shown with syntax highlighting, the icon of the app each Clip came from, Pins with their own icons, drag and drop straight into another app, and a light or dark theme. Both paste in a keystroke; only one of them is a pleasure to look at while you do it.

Price and open source

Maccy is free and open source (MIT license), and promises to stay free. That's a real advantage: anyone can read its code.

Clipster isn't open source. It has a free tier (40 Clips, 1 Pin, full search, no account needed), and you only pay for Pro when you want sync across Mac, Windows and iPhone. Put simply: if you'll never leave your Mac, Maccy costs nothing and does the job. If you will, that's what Pro is for.

So, which one is for you?

Maccy is the better pick if you…

  • only ever use one Mac
  • want free and open source above everything else
  • want the lightest app possible

Clipster is the better pick if you…

  • also use a Windows PC or an iPhone
  • want a real interface — cards, previews, highlighted code — not a plain list
  • want your clipboard synced between devices, end-to-end encrypted
  • want to organize reusable Clips into named Pins
  • want to paste your Clips inside any iPhone app

Switching from Maccy

Nothing to export: your history rebuilds as you copy. Install Clipster, move the few items you had pinned in Maccy into a Pin, and quit Maccy so both apps don't record the same clipboard twice.
