How to copy and paste between an iPhone and a Windows PC

Updated on

You copy an address on your iPhone, sit down at your Windows PC, press Ctrl+V… and get whatever you copied on the PC an hour ago. That's normal: there is no built-in shared clipboard between iPhone and Windows. This guide explains why, gives you the free workarounds, and shows how to get a real shared clipboard.

Why it doesn't work out of the box

Each company's clipboard sharing stays inside its own ecosystem:

  • Apple Universal Clipboard works between Apple devices only (Mac, iPhone, iPad, Vision Pro), nearby, signed in to the same Apple Account, with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Handoff on. If it fails even between your own iPhone and Mac, see Universal Clipboard not working: fixes.
  • Windows clipboard sync (Settings > System > Clipboard) syncs copied text between Windows devices with the same Microsoft account.
  • Microsoft SwiftKey's Cloud Clipboard syncs with Windows, but Microsoft says it's Android-only, not available on iOS.
  • Phone Link connects an iPhone to Windows for messages, calls and notifications, but its cross-device copy and paste only works with selected Android phones. Microsoft's own Q&A answer states that clipboard sharing isn't supported with iPhone.

So you need either a workaround or an app that runs on both. The same goes for a Windows PC and a Mac: see how to copy and paste between Windows and Mac.

Free methods without a clipboard app

These work today, cost nothing, and are fine for the occasional copy.

1. Send it to yourself

Paste the text into an email, or a message to yourself in a chat app you also use on your PC (many messaging apps have a "notes to self" or saved-messages chat and a desktop or web version). Then copy it on the PC.

Good for: one-off links and text. Downside: several steps every time, and it clutters your inbox or chats.

2. Use Notes on iCloud.com

Paste into a note in Apple Notes on your iPhone (with iCloud sync on), then open iCloud.com in a browser on your PC, go to Notes and copy it from there.

Good for: longer text, if you already use Apple Notes. Downside: you need to sign in to iCloud on the PC and open a browser.

3. Use a cross-platform notes app

Any notes app with an iPhone app and a Windows or web version works the same way. Downside: same friction as above.

4. For photos and files

The clipboard isn't the best tool for big files. Use iCloud for Windows or a cloud drive you already have, then open the file on your PC.

Apps that give you a real shared clipboard

If you do this every day, an app that runs on both sides removes the friction. Options we checked:

  • CrossPaste is a great free choice if your iPhone and PC are always on the same Wi-Fi.
  • ClipboardFusion suits Windows users who also want macros and text clean-up.
  • Clipster is built for syncing from anywhere with end-to-end encryption, and also covers a Mac. Its limits: there's no Android version, and it's a young app.

Setting up Clipster between iPhone and PC

  1. On your PC, download Clipster for Windows and install it.
  2. On your iPhone, install Clipster from the App Store.
  3. Turn on sync in the app and create your master password. Your copies are encrypted end to end on your device before they're synced; we never see the password, so store it in a password manager. If you lose it, synced data can't be recovered.
  4. Just copy. Once sync is on, it's automatic: what you copy on your iPhone shows up in Clipster on your PC, and what you copy on your PC shows up on your iPhone. No button to press, nothing to send. On the PC, open Clipster and paste.
  5. Add the Clipster keyboard on iPhone (Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard) to paste any copy into any app.

Optional: create a Pin such as "Addresses" or "Work" for things you paste over and over.

Privacy tips for any method

  • Clipboards often contain passwords, codes and private messages. If a tool syncs through a server, prefer end-to-end encryption.
  • Don't leave sensitive text in email or chats just to move it.
  • Clear what you don't need: most clipboard apps let you delete items.

FAQ

Can I copy on my iPhone and paste on Windows without an app?

Not directly. Apple's Universal Clipboard only works between Apple devices, and Microsoft's clipboard sharing (Windows sync, SwiftKey, Phone Link) doesn't support iPhone. Use a workaround such as email or Notes on iCloud.com, or an app that runs on both.

Does Phone Link let me copy and paste with an iPhone?

No. Phone Link with an iPhone covers messages, calls and notifications. Cross-device copy and paste is limited to selected Android devices.

Is there a free app to share the clipboard between iPhone and PC?

CrossPaste is free and open source and syncs over your local network.

Is syncing my clipboard to the cloud safe?

It's safe when the data is end-to-end encrypted, so the server can't read it. Clipster encrypts every copy on your device before syncing.

Does Universal Clipboard work with Windows?

No. Universal Clipboard is limited to Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account.

Can I also include a Mac?

Yes, with Clipster: the same clipboard across Windows, Mac and iPhone. See best cross-platform clipboard managers.
