Why screenshots and images don't show up in Win+V (and how to keep them)
Updated on
Short answer: Windows clipboard history keeps images only as bitmaps of up to 4 MB. If a screenshot doesn't appear in Windows + V, it's usually too large (common with high-resolution or multi-monitor captures), you copied an image file rather than the picture itself, or the app put the image on the clipboard in a format history doesn't keep. If nothing appears, not even text, clipboard history itself isn't recording.
First: does text appear?
Copy a word and press Windows + V.
- Text appears, images don't: read the causes below.
- Nothing appears: clipboard history is off or broken. See Win+V not working: fixes.
Cause 1: the image is over 4 MB
Microsoft documents a 4 MB limit per item in clipboard history (Microsoft Support). Screenshots are stored uncompressed on the clipboard, so a full-screen capture on a high-resolution display, or across several monitors, can easily exceed it.
What happens: the capture is still on the live clipboard, so Ctrl + V works right away. It just isn't added to the history, so it's gone once you copy something else.
Fixes:
- Capture a smaller area: Windows + Shift + S, then Rectangle mode.
- Let Snipping Tool save the file. By default it saves captures to your Pictures\Screenshots folder (check its settings). Then you don't depend on the clipboard.
- Windows + Print Screen saves a full-screen capture directly to the Screenshots folder.
- There's no setting to raise the 4 MB limit.
Cause 2: you copied a file, not a picture
Selecting a .png or .jpg in File Explorer and pressing Ctrl + C copies a reference to the file, not its pixels. Clipboard history keeps text, HTML and bitmaps only, so files never appear in Windows + V.
Fix: open the image (in Photos or Paint), select it, and copy from there. Or paste the file normally with Ctrl + V in File Explorer, which still works.
Cause 3: the app uses its own image format
Some apps put images on the clipboard in their own private formats, sometimes without a standard bitmap alongside. The image pastes fine back into the same app but never shows in Windows + V.
Fix: paste into Paint, then select all (Ctrl + A) and copy again. Or export or save the image from the app.
Cause 4: "Copy image address" copied a link
In a browser, Copy image address copies the URL as text, and that does appear in history, as a link. Use Copy image to copy the picture itself.
Cause 5: history was cleared by a restart
Clipboard history is cleared each time you restart, except pinned items. Pin screenshots you need to keep: Windows + V, then …, then Pin. Better still, save them as files.
A reliable screenshot workflow on Windows
- Press Windows + Shift + S and capture the area.
- Paste immediately where you need it (Ctrl + V), or open the notification to annotate it in Snipping Tool.
- Rely on the auto-saved file in Screenshots for anything you'll need later, not on clipboard history.
- Pin small, frequently reused images (a signature, a logo) in Windows + V.
If you work with lots of images
Clipboard managers handle images differently. Some keep larger images, some save them to disk, and some show thumbnails you can search by date or source. Options on Windows include Ditto, CopyQ and Clipster. Clipster shows previews of images, links, colors and files in its history, keeps the ones you reuse in Pins, and syncs, end-to-end encrypted, with Clipster on Mac and iPhone. Check how each tool handles very large images for your use case. See the best clipboard managers for Windows or the download page.

FAQ
Why does my screenshot paste but not appear in Win+V?
It's probably larger than the 4 MB per-item limit of clipboard history. It's still on the live clipboard, so Ctrl + V works, but history doesn't keep it.
Can I increase the Windows clipboard image size limit?
No. Microsoft documents 4 MB per item with no setting to change it. Capture smaller areas or save screenshots as files.
Why don't copied image files show in clipboard history?
Copying a file in File Explorer copies a file reference, not the image. Clipboard history only keeps text, HTML and bitmap images.
Where does Snipping Tool save screenshots?
By default, in your Pictures\Screenshots folder, if automatic saving is on in Snipping Tool's settings.
Do pinned images survive a restart?
Yes. Pinned items are kept when Windows restarts and when you select Clear all.
Disclosure: We make Clipster, a clipboard manager mentioned at the end. The fixes don't need any app.
