Universal Clipboard not working between iPhone and Mac: how to fix it
Updated on
Short answer: Universal Clipboard needs both devices to be signed in to the same Apple Account, with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Handoff turned on, and within about 10 meters (30 feet) of each other. Apple also warns that a VPN can block it. Check those, restart both devices, install updates, and copy something fresh: Universal Clipboard content only stays available for a short time.
How Universal Clipboard is supposed to work
Copy text, an image or another item on your iPhone, then paste it on your nearby Mac (or the other way around), with no button to press. Apple describes it in Use Universal Clipboard and in the iPhone User Guide. Two things to keep in mind:
- It carries only your latest copy, not a history.
- The content stays on the other device's clipboard briefly, or until you copy something else.
Fix 1: same Apple Account on both devices
- iPhone: Settings, then tap your name at the top.
- Mac: System Settings, then your name at the top of the sidebar.
They must show the same Apple Account. Family members' accounts don't count.
Fix 2: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on (both devices)
Both radios must be on, even if you use Ethernet on the Mac. Toggle them off and on once. Apple doesn't require a specific Wi-Fi network for Universal Clipboard, but being on the same network is a sensible test if it still fails.
Fix 3: Handoff on (both devices)
Universal Clipboard is part of Handoff (Apple: Handoff):
- iPhone: Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity (or AirPlay & Handoff on older versions), then turn on Handoff.
- Mac: System Settings > General > AirDrop & Continuity (or AirDrop & Handoff), then turn on "Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices".
Handoff is on by default, but it's often turned off by accident or by a work profile.
Fix 4: bring the devices closer
Apple says the devices must be within 30 feet (10 meters) of each other. Walls, interference and Bluetooth congestion can reduce this. Test with the iPhone right next to the Mac.
Fix 5: check your VPN
Apple's iPhone guide notes that a VPN whose configuration prevents local networking can interfere with Continuity features. Pause the VPN and test. If that fixes it, check the VPN's settings for local network access.
Fix 6: restart and update
- Restart both devices.
- Install pending updates: Settings > General > Software Update on iPhone, System Settings > General > Software Update on Mac.
- Make sure both devices meet the Continuity system requirements.
Fix 7: test properly
Many "it doesn't work" cases are timing:
- On the iPhone, copy a new word.
- Within a few seconds, on the Mac, click into a text field and press Command-V.
- Try the reverse direction too.
If one direction works and not the other, recheck Handoff on the device that fails to send.
Fix 8: the "Allow Paste" prompt on iPhone
When you paste something on the iPhone that you copied on the Mac, iOS may ask whether to allow pasting. That's a privacy feature, not a failure. You can set each app's behavior in Settings > Apps > [app] > Paste from Other Apps.
Fix 9: managed (work) devices
Company-managed Macs or iPhones can have Handoff or Continuity features restricted by device management. If the Handoff setting is missing or grayed out, ask your IT team.
Advanced (Mac)
Some users reset the Mac's Handoff preferences or restart its background services from Terminal. These are unofficial steps, not documented by Apple. Try everything above first, and only use such commands if you understand them.
When Universal Clipboard isn't the right tool
Universal Clipboard is great for one quick item between nearby Apple devices. It doesn't:
- work with Windows PCs (see iPhone to Windows PC and Windows and Mac);
- keep a history of what you copied (iPhone clipboard history, Mac clipboard history);
- work when the devices are far apart, for example your iPhone at home and your Mac at the office.
For those cases, a cross-device clipboard app is an alternative. Options include Paste (Apple devices) and Clipster (Windows, Mac and iPhone; history with search, Pins and previews; end-to-end encrypted sync that works over the internet, not only nearby). See the best cross-platform clipboard managers or the download page.

FAQ
Why can't I paste on my Mac what I copied on my iPhone?
The usual causes are different Apple Accounts, Handoff turned off, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth off, too much distance, or a VPN blocking local networking. Also copy something fresh: the content only stays available briefly.
How long does Universal Clipboard keep what I copied?
Apple says only "briefly", or until you copy something else on either device.
Does Universal Clipboard work with Windows?
No. It only works between Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account.
Do I need to be on the same Wi-Fi network?
Apple's requirements list Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on, the same Apple Account, Handoff on, and devices near each other. Being on the same network is a good troubleshooting step.
Can Universal Clipboard copy images and files?
It handles text, images, photos and videos. For multiple or large files, Apple recommends AirDrop or other file-transfer options.
Disclosure: We make Clipster, a clipboard manager mentioned at the end. The fixes below come from Apple's documentation and don't need any app.
